What's going on in our local community

Cathays Community Centre

We are a vibrant community centre that maintains an independent café, recording studio, and bakery together with our own meeting room, two large halls, music rehearsal rooms, and social space. We also operate a wide range of youth provisions and other community projects.

Cathays & Central Youth & Community Project is a registered charity (number 1122532) and company limited by guarantee that manages Cathays Community Centre. As well as aiming to serve our local community in Cathays, we have developed some specialist services that attract people from Cardiff and the wider region.

The charity is governed by trustees who are supported by a wider management board. Board of trustees: Simon Murray, Isobel Sweet, Ieuan Bater, Beth Williams, Ali Ahmed, Rhiannon Mc Namara, Khalid Awad-Khan. They meet monthly on the 3rd Tuesday of every month at 7 pm. They also meet in the intervening Tuesdays at strategic subcommittees.

Cathays Community Centre is open every day between 9am and 11pm.

36-38 Cathays Terrace, Cardiff, Cathays, CF24 4HX.

Trans Aid Cymru

Trans Aid Cymru aims to help Transgender, Non-Binary and Intersex (TIN) people through mutual aid support. The project is run by TIN people for TIN people, making it inclusive and understanding of the community needs.

While most of our members are based in Cardiff and Swansea and most of our current service users are based in South Wales, we are committed to the community of trans, intersex, and non-binary (TIN) people throughout Wales.

All of our grants are available to people in all areas of Wales, as are all of our non-site-specific projects such as the correspondence scheme, all of our online resources, and the trans GP map.

While we acknowledge that many organisations that are supposed to serve all of Wales are often focused in the South, particularly around the Cardiff area, we don’t want anybody to feel that they can’t access our services, or contribute to our work, because they live far away. We are here for trans, intersex and non-binary people across all of Wales.

We’re really interested in working with TIN folks throughout Wales! If you are interested in helping support our services in different areas of Wales you can email us at enquiries@transaid.cymru or check out our join us page.

Swimming events @ Maindy Centre

We run a swimming event every month in Cardiff! The whole pool is rented out just for trans, nonbinary, and intersex people, as well as their friends and family.

Tickets are free, or a donation of £5.50 to help Trans Aid Cymru host to support trans people across Wales! For safety reasons, we keep details of this event and where to get tickets private. You can find out more by joining our private Facebook group using the link below, or joining our Discord Announcement server

Women Connect First

Women Connect First work with businesses and organisations in the community to tackle intolerance, and promote a more positive attitude to cultural difference.

They have specialist knowledge in all issues surrounding racial equality and equal opportunities.

Women Connect First was established on 1 March 2001, St. David’s Day, to empower Black & Minority Ethnic Women in Cardiff and South East Wales by offering a range of services and training in order to improve their livelihoods and employability. The organisation has moved on since and has expanded its services.

At present they cater for a wider client group and offer a range of services including advice, advocacy, counselling, and a wide range of training programmes and volunteering opportunities amongst others. WCF targets, in particular, disadvantaged, isolated and marginalised Black and Minority Ethnic women, who are experiencing multiple layers of deprivation, discrimination and exclusion in accessing services and employment.

Their mission is to empower and improve the lives of disadvantaged BME women and communities in South Wales, to help them realise their full potential and make a positive contribution to Welsh society.

YMCA

YMCA believes in fairness and opportunity. There are essential building blocks for a full and rewarding life: a safe home; acceptance; guidance; friendship; physical and mental health; academic support; employment skills; and access to real opportunities.

Many young people have never known these things; other people have lost one or more as they grew up, but we all need them.

All of us. At YMCA, we provide these critical foundations for a fresh, strong start for young people and a better quality of life in the community.

Our values

The way we act at YMCA is characterised by five strong and distinctive values that flow from our Christian ethos.

We seek out

We never stop looking for ways to transform lives for the better.

We welcome

We respect, support, and protect without fail. Everyone is included, and everyone belongs.

We inspire

We build — and rebuild — people’s confidence in their own strength, and foster conviction in everyone’s potential.

We speak out

We stand up for what’s right, advocate when needed, and encourage people to find the power of their own voice.

We serve others

We are committed to the wellbeing of others in mind, body, and spirit, and to fair and equitable opportunities for all.
