Friday 20th December sees the opening of the GLL Sport Foundation Awards 2025.

Applications are welcomed from aspiring athletes in Islington for the free gym memberships and bursaries offered by the programme which has fostered talent up and down the country.

The GLL Sport Foundation (GSF) was launched 17 years ago by leisure operator and charitable social enterprise GLL, with the aim of supporting talented young athletes with funding and practical help.

GLL operate the leisure facilities in Islington - under the ‘Better’ brand.

The programme continues to widen and deepen the opportunities that come through sport across all communities. In 2024, GSF supported 37 athletes in Islington with a cumulative value of £22,250.

Montana Jackson who received support in 2024 commented “As a national triple jumper I am so grateful for the support I've received from GLL Sport Foundation. The Better membership has allowed me to always perform my training sessions wherever I am, which gives me much more flexibility with balancing training with work, where I'm often required to be in different locations. I also love being able to use other facilities such as the swimming pools to help with my recovery. I have also found the physiotherapy and mental health support really beneficial. It's also really great to be part of a community of so many inspiring people from all sports and backgrounds”.

According the GSF research, a lack of money to compete in their favourite sport is the biggest threat to the sporting dreams of young people.  Most people agree more should be done to support Britain’s talented young athletes achieve sporting success for the opportunities and national pride that stem from this.

GSF Awards include free access to Better Gyms and Leisure Centres across the UK.
