The UK’s largest independent athlete award programme invites applicants from Sutton

Friday 20 December sees the opening of the GLL Sport Foundation Awards 2025.

Applications are welcomed from aspiring athletes in Sutton for the free gym memberships and bursaries offered by the programme, which has fostered talent up and down the country.

The GLL Sport Foundation (GSF) was launched 17 years ago by leisure operator and charitable social enterprise GLL, with the aim of supporting talented young athletes with funding and practical help.  

GLL operate leisure facilities in Sutton - under the ‘Better’ brand. 

The programme continues to widen and deepen the opportunities that come through sport across all communities. 

Applications for the programme are open until February 20th 2025 and athletes from the Sutton area are encouraged to apply. Last year, the GLL Sport Foundation supported 5 local Sutton based athletes, including national visually impaired tennis B1 doubles champion, Tracy Compton and Paralympic medal winner and UK number 1 ranked female wheelchair tennis player Lucy Shuker. These Sutton supported athletes received award contributions totalling over £4,000. 

According to GSF research, a lack of money to compete in their favourite sport is the biggest threat to the sporting dreams of young people.  Most people agree more should be done to support Britain’s talented young athletes achieve sporting success for the opportunities and national pride that stem from this. GSF Awards include free access to Better Gyms and Leisure Centres across the UK helping to break down the barriers to access that many face. 

The GSF Awards Application window opens 20 December 2024 and closes on 20 February 2025.
