Athletics

Manchester Regional Arena is the perfect place for those looking to take their first steps into athletics or take training up a level. Our impressive indoor and outdoor athletics tracks have hosted Olympic champions and some of the most exciting national competitions in recent years!

Everybody is welcome on our tracks. We have pay as you go sessions or for juniors when not look at one of our lessons and courses?

Lessons and Courses

FUNETICS

Funetics is a programme which provides athletics sessions to help 4-11 year old children learn, develop and practise running, jumping and throwing skills all year round, for a healthy and confident future.

Helping children to have fun whilst getting active, funetics provides a safe, fun and nurturing environment for children to develop fundamental movement skills and confidence to help support them in different sports in the future.

Funetics reflects the requirements of the National Curriculum Key Stage 1 and 2 to inspire all young pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sports and other physically demanding activities.

RUN, JUMP, THROW

A fun way to get fit and learn the fundamentals of agility, balance and coordination. Offering a great social environment, all delivered in our superb indoor and outdoor arenas. A programme full of games and awards, led by minimum level 2 UKA coaches. 

We run two groups for different ages: 

  • 7-9 years old, every Tuesday 5pm - 6pm
  • 8-11 years old, every Thursday 5pm - 6pm

Progression to our advanced programme is available

Casual Sessions

ABC ATHLETICS

Are you a returning adult interested in picking up where you left off, or never started but really want to have a go?

Then our Athletics Adult Beginner Class ABC is just for you.

Sessions feature Athletics style fitness conditioning combined with learning the basics of a range of disciplines;

  • Long jump, triple jump and high jump
  • Sprint, hurdles and distance running
  • Shot putt, javelin and discuss

Join us every Friday from 7pm to 8.30pm at Manchester Regional Arena

PAY AS YOU GO TRACK SESSIONS

Our outdoor arena boasts an eight lane 400m track with covered seating for 6,500 spectators.

The indoor athletics hall has a 200m banked running track and a six lane 60m sprint track. Specially designed nets cater for throw events and there are also facilities for pole vault, high jump and long jump. 

We have timetabled sessions for those that are already experienced in athletics and are able to use the facilities without a coach. Available facilities include indoor 60m & 200m tracks, outdoor 100m & 400m tracks, long jump, high jump, throwing cages and pole vault. You can pay as you go.

INCLUSIVE ATHLETICS

We run Inclusive Athletics sessions on a Monday and Friday, from 6pm to 7pm. No need to book, you can just drop in.

 

TRACK SAFETY ETIQUETTE

GENERAL

1. Follow the rules and regulations set out by the Centre team and UK Athletics

2. Report any accidents or incidents to the centre management team

3. Examine all equipment before use for any faults and that it is in safe working order

4. Secure personal belongings in the lockers provided

5. You must gain permission from the centre prior to using photographic equipment 

THROWING AREA

1. Never cross the grass throwing infield area. If you need to get to the other side of the track, follow the perimeter.

2. Throws should only take place in the designated throwing areas

3. Discus and hammer must only be performed in the throwing cage

4. Only one person in the throwing cage at one time

5. Throwing must be supervised by a qualified coach, official or teacher.

6. Other track users coaches and officials must stay at least 2m from the netting. 

TRACK

1. Always run anti clockwise around the track.

2. Please always be alert and look when crossing the track, especially after finishing your run.

3. Lanes 1 and 2 are for multiple laps at high effort levels and longer distance running.

4. Lane 3 is for overtaking any runners in lane 1 and 2.

5. Lanes 4, 5 and 6 are intended for sprints.

6. Lanes 7 and 8 (including 9 and 10 on the home straight) are for hurdles (hurdling should be coordinated between coaches).

7. Please do not sit, stand, lie or wait in any of the lanes around the track, when you are not running, please wait safely in the seating area, stands or the D.

8. If using starting blocks, please use them in the appropriate lanes and do not leave them on the 100m bend.

9. When catching a slower runner, athletes should shout ‘track’ and the slower runner should keep left, the faster runner will overtake on the right.

10. Headphones are allowed, however during peak times you need to be extremely cautious of other runners and can be asked by a member of staff to remove them for your own safety.

MANCHESTER HARRIERS

Manchester Harriers & AC is a thriving, friendly club. We have over 300 members from the age of 7 upwards, and welcome new members of all abilities.

BELLE VUE RACERS

Training Day - Thursday

Training Time - 7pm - 8pm

Belle Vue Racers, established in 1989 is a UK Athletics-affiliated running club based at the Manchester Regional Arena. A small, friendly, community club, with members from all walks of life.

They take part in many races, both local and further afield, on the road, the trails, through cross-country and even over the occasional fell. Sessions come with no pressure, only encouragement! No pressure however, only encouragement! Drop by and say “Hello” sometime! You’d be very welcome.

MANCHESTER YMCA HARRIERS

Training Day: Tuesday

Training Time: 7.00pm - 8.30pm

Manchester YMCA Harriers are one of the longest established running clubs in the UK at over 130 years old! They are affiliated to England Athletics and frequently take part in races and other running events. They also have club championships in cross-country, road, fell and track disciplines, and particularly enjoy taking part in events where they can run as a team!

BLACKLEY & NORTH MANCHESTER AC

Training Day - Monday

Training Time - 7pm - 9pm

Training Day - Thursday

Training Time - 7pm - 9pm

We take part in Track & Field, Cross Country, Indoor Meetings & Sports Hall. We cover all age groups and everyone is made welcome. Sessions include sprints & endurance. The track has throwing facilities which are also used. For the younger members we specialise in Sports Hall. We are governed by England Athletics.
